Should you book a legal consultation, it is helpful to have some idea of what will occur when you walk into your potential attorney’s office. We already covered how and what to prepare for your consultation in our blog here , so now it’s time to walk through the basics of what happens at a legal consultation.

Here are some standard steps most legal consultations are made up of:

  1. Presenting Your Case: First, you will discuss with your potential attorney the details of your case. They will likely prompt you with further questions to gain a better understanding of what exactly occurred and how they might help you.
  2. Assessing the Situation: After the initial walkthrough of your case, the lawyer will weigh the facts of the case and any evidence to see how strong your position is. This is also when they may address some legal strategies or issues you may face.
  3. Potential Next Steps: The attorney will lay out what your current options would be in terms of what legal grounds you can move forward with, as well as their assessment on potential or most likely outcomes, obstacles, and what the legal process would generally look like as a whole.
  4. Legal Fees: The lawyer will also inform you of what their rates are, other potential costs and fees you may have to cover, and how the billing process would go.
  5. Sealing the Deal: Now comes the point where you both would need to decide if you are the right fit for each other. It is always a possibility that an attorney may not take your case for many different reasons – most important being, they are not the best path for you to take. If they do offer to take you on as a client, you must also decide if you are onboard with hiring them given everything presented to you and if you feel they will fight for your best interests.
  6. Moving Forward: Once the beginnings of an attorney-client relationship are established, you will likely move on to the more formal aspect of paperwork, such as a retainer agreement, documents explaining what your part will be in the case and your willingness to fulfill it, and things of that nature. Next steps will likely be laid out, and you and your new lawyer will proceed from there.
REMEMBER: Simply speaking and/or consulting with a lawyer does NOT grant you attorney-client privilege or confidentiality. Keep this in mind throughout your search.
